Route 66
Winslow, Arizona.
I live exploring new places in my state I’ve never seen and Winslow, AZ was at the top of my list. You might ask why go to Winslow, AZ?
Many people visit to stand on the corner in Winslow, AZ tourist attraction.
Before arriving in Winslow, I made a stop at the Meteor Crater just outside Winslow. It was about 5 miles off Hwy 40. There were interesting signs along the way as you approached such as 4 miles to impact. When we arrived it wasn’t too crowded yet, so go early if possible. The museum has many interesting activites, an interactive film, exhibits to walk through. There is a guided tour you can take, but be prepared and physically able to climb stairs. I skipped the tour and went to observation deck outside. There are several areas to view crater. There was something at the bottom of crater, an exhibit, I looked through telescope and it astronaut model was at the bottom. I assume it represents Apollo astronauts like Neil Armstrong who trained here prior to their mission.
Admission price was a little high, but discounts for seniors, military, active and retired. I did feel seeing the crater was worth the money, so I recommend visiting.
As we entered Winslow I stopped at a local Farmer’s Market. It’s interesting to see local goods and products sold and I like supporting local community when I can. I visited the Chamber of Commerce building. I learned a wealth of information by talking with staff. Often I forget about stopping at visitor’s centers, but you can really learn so much.
I planned to visit the famous tourist site standing on the corner in Winslow, AZ, made famous by the Eagles song. It was so crowded, so I drove on by. Next the famous La Posada Hotel, an it did not disappoint! It’s free to wander the beautiful grounds, inside it a wonderful restaurant, but was closed for repairs that day. The is a wonderful shop and book shop area, along with an art museum.
As a travel agent I checked the rates which were reasonable for such a historic hotel. La Posada has a rich history as one of the Harvey Hotels in the West. It’s fascinating to learn about the history and “Harvey Girls.” They are several Harvey Hotels still in use today. Many famous residents stayed here as they took train to Hollywood. Past guests include Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, FDR, John Wayne to name a few.
If you are looking for a trip with rich history, geological wonders, and remnants of Route 66, take a visit to Winslow, AZ!
